Brassfield Carnival

Spring Carnival - Friday, June 1st from 5-8pm in the lower field.
Brassfield’s first Spring Carnival will be held on Friday, June 1st  in the Lower Field @ 5-8 PM with parking/bus service from Bayleaf Baptist Church. Bring the family out to enjoy inflatables, games, food, prizes, face painting, a cake walk, a dunk booth and more.
Volunteers are desperately needed at this point, or we will have to scale the event back dramatically.  There are opportunities to help out with set up during the day if you have plans that evening.  Please help!:
Volunteers can sign-up now to run a game. We are offering 2 shifts during the event to allow everyone time to work and enjoy the carnival with their family. Without our volunteers, we will not be able to run all the game stations we have put together, so please sign-up and encourage other wake county approved volunteers to secure their spot early. Grab a friend and work a station together! It is NOT too late to seek approval. Find out more at the game volunteer link:
Donations: Thank you families for your generous donations! You too can use this sign-up to provide carnival donations (like small prizes, candy, cakes, soda, water, etc). Donations can be dropped off in the school lobby through Wednesday, May 16th.
Games: Most games will take 1-2 tickets, with a few free games. To help you plan, one child will be able to play each game once with 20 tickets. Save money and order now!
Pre-Purchase of Tickets is encouraged.  You save money and it will help us gauge attendance, helping us to have enough food and prizes. Tickets are available at a discount ($4 for 10 tickets, $6 for 15 tickets, $10 for 25 tickets or $20 for 50 tickets), by returning your pre-order form with payment (in a sealed envelope) or during afternoon carpool on 5/15 or 5/30, or Movie Night on 5/18.

Just a friendly reminder that there are several items that have been sent home and needed to be returned or paid for.  Please check that you have...

  • returned any Jump Rope for Heart money or tickets (if collected).
  • spring pictures and/or money.

Some Quick Notes...

Hello and Happy Tuesday!  Here are a few notes about events in the classroom and around Brassfield.

Image result for dr. seuss1.  This Friday, March 2 is Read Across America Day (and Early Release Day at 1:15).  Students are encouraged to bring a favorite book or a book they are reading to school.  We will be taking a SCHOOLwide picture at some point with kids holding their books.

2.  This Friday, March 2, also in honor of Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss's birthday, the 2nd grade will be doing a rotation of several activities that will incorporate literacy around our curriculum (science, writing, math, reading, and social studies).  We are inviting the pups to wear "Dr. Seuss wear" if they wish.

3.  This Wednesday, February 28, we will have our LAST in-school field trip.  Science Is Fun for Everyone will lead the pups in a variety of hands-on experiments and activities about weather.  Our time slot is 10:35-11:50.

Image result for write about reading4.  Writing in Reading...To help the pups improve their written responses to reading, I am going to start a weekly challenge in at home reading.  The pups SHOULD be reading each night (independently or with someone) and discussing or thinking about what they read.  I see the evidence of this each day when I hear the pups talk about books with their friends or me.
So...starting this week...I will be posting (on the Homework tab) 2-4 questions about reading.  These questions could be those we are currently working on in class, review, or some that will extend their reading and thinking.  Any student that brings in 3 questions with a well-written response to share, will earn the challenge dojos (3).  Pups are welcome to keep a reading response journal to just use lined paper.  I look forward to reading about THEIR reading!

5.  Reminder that on March 20, the pups will become entrepreneurs and sell a product they have made at home.  They have been working hard to earn "class money" to be able to spend at Enterprise Day.  Please make sure your pup comes prepared with 20-40 homemade items (inexpensive) to sell to their classmates.  If you have any questions, please email me.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!

This week has been jam packed with activity!  The pups had fun going into MakerSpace and creating their Valentine's Day mailbox.  They also used the MakerSpace materials to create a self-portrait of themselves today and what they think they will look like in 100 year as well as to create a picture using the digits in 100.

Friendly Reminders:

  1. There are still a few pups that have not paid for the field trips and Scholastic News magazine.  The total cost for everything is $28.00.  Please help us by sending in payments with your pup ASAP.
  2. The weather is crazy this time of year and pups need to be prepared with a jacket at school in the event that the temperature is lower than 45*.
  3. Please check with your pup if they are in need of school supplies.  Many of the pups do not have glue sticks, pencils, sharpeners, or crayons.

The pups have been very busy SWIRLING through math, reading, writing, and more!

Image result for geometryIn math, we have been exploring the world of GEOMETRY.  We have been discussing the MANY vocabulary words and how they are ALL connected.  We also discussed how many shapes can look different but still have the same name.  They are in the process of completing a choice menu of vocabulary, creative design, literature in math, and specials in math.

As always, we are reviewing

1 and 2-step story problems, addition and subtraction to 1,000, telling time, and using money.

Please continue to help with these skill at home.  Please encourage the pups to practice math skill on Xtramath, Starfall, and Prodigy at home.  I sent home the information about logging on and setting up Prodigy last week.

Image result for character feelings
There is a lot going on in reading.  The pups have been paying close attention to how characters react and feelings change throughout stories based on events in the story.  They have also begun looking at stories through different points of view - for instance, how would the wolf explain what happened to Little Red Riding Hood?  Please continue to read with your child each day!

Image result for chocolate
The pups just selected a CHOCOLATE book to read and use to explore our learning through this decadent treat.  Please ask your pup which book they selected.  If they have this book at home, they are welcome to read it and discuss it there too.  We would also appreciate any donations or sharing of the following books as we are short a few.

The books we are in need of are:
                     Hot Fudge by James Howe
The Chocolate Sabotage by Geronimo Stilton

Today the pups were well behaved as they listened and watched a cultural arts play about George Washington Carver and many other famous and not so famous African Americas.  In the classroom, the pups have been involved in a scavenger hunt of famous African Americans.

We are composing a Classroom Listen, Look, and Learn poster.

Image result for literary devices
This week we took a little break from poetry as a focus in writing to focus on thinking of our friends and how they do wonderful things for us.  Each pup thought of someone that has been a TRUE friend and wrote about that friend, what they have done, and how it changed how they feel.  We have been looking at literary devices for writing poetry and how they can be used in our every day writing as well.  Be sure to ask your pup about the "Fancy Nancy and Fancy Ned" words we have learned and practiced.  We will learning a few more literary devices and then put them ALL to use in a special poetry book.

Thank you to all of the pups that have participated in bringing in and sharing poems from home!

Image result for piggy bankOur Social Studies unit about economics and money is going VERY well!   The pups are learning about minting, currency, goods and services, budgeting, and more.  As they complete their Big Book of Money, they are reading, answering questions, doing a webquest, and connecting the lessons to their lives.
At the same time, we are using this a helpful extension to the money unit in math.  The pups are earning coins for their dojos and can save or spend them to "buy" rewards in the classroom.  They are also exchanging coins for equivalent coins.  Be on the lookout next week for information about our Enterprise Day.  This will be the culminating activity and involve pups becoming entrepreneurs in the classroom for a day.
