Homework

The 2nd grade team understands that students work really hard during the school day and often have LOTS of extracurricular activities. However, we also know that practice at home helps students be aware that parents know what is going on in the classroom as well as strengthen knowledge.

Reading Challenge:  Read EACH day.  Neatly, on lined paper or in a reading journal, respond to 2-3 of the following questions.  Remember what we talk about when giving written responses.

Use the RACE strategy to help you (Restate the question, Answer the question, Cite your Evidence from the text).

Each response should have at least 2 details from the text to support your answer.  Bring in your written responses on Friday to earn 3 dojos for completing the weekly reading challenge.

Question #1:  What is the problem in the story?  How does the main                  character respond to that problem?  How is the problem solved?

Questions #2:  How did the main character feel at the beginning of the                story (part you read)? How did the character feel at the end of                    the story (part you read)?  What happened that made their                          feelings change?

Questions #3:  Identify 2 text features (NON-FICTION only) you found                in the book.  Explain how the information in that text feature                      helped you understand the text better.

Questions #4:  Who is telling the story (name of character, narrator,                  other)? How do you know?  How would the story be different if                    someone else told the story?

Math homework will be assigned daily (Monday-Thursday) and expected back at school the following day.  An exception to this occurs when we have math assessments.  On these nights, I encourage the pups to play a THINKING Game (checkers, chess, addition war, Battleship, Mastermind, Sorry, Mancala, etc.).

WCPSS homework help

Pups are expected to read 15-20 minutes each night and bring a book to share on Fridays.  They should select a GOOD FIT book and read either independently or with an adult.  A helpful strategy to build comprehension and communication skills is to encourage them to discuss what they read with you.  I will create and post suggested discussion questions.

Students will not be required to maintain a reading log, however, they have an optional reading BINGO board (see below) to log completed books and earn rewards.  Each pup will be given 1 board to keep in their DogHouse folder as they complete it.
